[edit] Receiving AIM assignments on your mobile phone

Many agents prefer to receive assignments via their mobile phone-- you can be walking around town and taking assignments, performing them, and reporting back, all from your mobile.

One way to do this is to use a little known feature of AOL Instant Messenger called "IM Forwarding":

  1. go to: http://mobile.aol.com/aolproducts/mobile-aim/im-forwarding
  2. on the right hand side of the page you'll see a gray box.
    1. put your phone number in and/or click "sign in"
    2. enter your AIM screenname and password and click "sign in"
    3. you may need to "add a phone" using the add a phone button.
    4. set "IM FORWARDING" option to "ON"

Now you can report your availability to gcrbot via IM, then sign off your computer. If you get an assignment, it will be forwarded to your mobile phone.

[edit] Reporting in via your mobile

There are three steps and three text messages you need to send the first time you want to talk to groundcrew from your mobile. After that, you have an entry in your phone's contacts section, and texting grouncrew is just like texting any of your friends.

[edit] Step 1: Signing in to AIM Mobile

SMS #1: send an SMS like "screenname password" to:

  • 265000 for cingular/at&t customers
  • 4646 for verizon, old at&t, or t-mobile

For Verizon, send a text message with your AIM screenname and password to 4646 in the format "screenname password". This will sign you on to AIM. You will then receive a list of numbers to use to manage your AIM mobile in 5 consecutive text messages. Text '?' to any of the numbers for help with that feature. Some important numbers are: SignOn:4646; SignOff:4647; Add:4648; Delete:4649; SetAway: 265011

[edit] Step 2: Make gcrbot one of your "Mobile Buddies"

SMS #2: text the word "gcrbot" to:

  • 265003 for cingular/at&t
  • 4648 for verizon, old at&t, or t-mobile

You will get back a phone number which will be a permanent number at which you can always txt gcrbot.

For Verizon users, message 4 of 5 lists your new buddy gcrbot and the number to text 'him' with in the format "gcrbot #".

[edit] Step 3: report in to gcrbot

By sending a third txt, you can put yourself on the map, or update your location, from your mobile phone.

To the number you received in step #2, text something like "2h" to say that you have two hours to receive assignments.

[edit] Prevent your various IM buddies besides gcrbot from IMing your Mobile

[edit] Prevent IMs coming to your phone when you are also at your computer!

from your phone:

  1. first, sign in phone into AIM (see Reporting in)
  2. second, send an SMS with any content (e.g. "hi") to:
    • 265011 for all providers

Now you always appear "Away" when you're at your phone. If you are not "away" on your computer, your phone will be ignored.
